The birthstone for May is Emerald. Emeralds are among the most captivating and enchanting jewels. The dark green color of an emerald is produced only under the rarest of conditions, thus making these stones valuable and incomparable. When the emerald goes through these conditions tiny cavities and cracks can result, which is why inclusions are tolerated in even the top quality emeralds. In top quality, emeralds are even more valuable than diamonds. A deep dark color in an emerald, even with inclusions, will be worth more than an almost flawless emerald in a paler color. Most of the world’s Emeralds come from Columbia, but also Zambia, Russia, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Pakistan and India.
Because the color of emeralds is so bright and unique, it can easily be worn through out all of the seasons. From great grandmothers, grandmothers, mothers and then you, it is the type of stone that is beloved by all generations.
It is rated fair to good for everyday wear, so it is a stone you need to be careful with. Avoid wearing emeralds when they’re going to be exposed to heat, like in the hot tub, sauna or steam room. They need to be protected from chemicals, so take them off before doing the dishes or cleaning the house. Take them off if there is any chance the emerald will be hit against something else, like when gardening or re-grouting your bathroom (I’m not kidding, someone did that once). Because they’re a little bit more delicate, they should be treated with a little more love!
