This blog is Mark’s perspective on St Maarten 2015- our annual winter holiday.
On a totally different note, have you ever been to SXM? As in the island of St Maarten? (Saint Martin, depending if your Dutch or French). I call it “the island that doesn’t give you diarrhea.
If you ever get a chance to travel there, DO IT! One thing about most of the islands in this part of the Caribbean is that you can always rely on hot sunny weather, which works well for the beach. Why else do we travel really?
We were able to travel to the island this year making it our 3rd trip there. (Yes we like it)
One of the most popular questions people ask about our trip is if we buy jewelry there. (The island is partly known for its shopping/jewelry district) The answer is no. Why? Simply because these are retail stores. Not suppliers. If you’ve ever done any travelling by air or cruise, you might’ve noticed these places (ports & airports) are able to use these settings to their advantage, as a last opportunity buy memorabilia before you leave the island. In their eyes, take your money and never see you again. We were talking to one store owner, (fine scotches) and he mentioned this very idea. 90% of the customers are never seen again. If they don’t buy at your store, they buy at the next one. Gone. Same if they do decide to buy at your store.
Very close to St. Martin is the world famous island of St Barth’s, known for celebrity sightings and super wealthy yacht owners. We saw 3 that we recognized, “Excellence IV & Excellence V.” AAAAAAnd…..Steve Jobs yacht! There are many different opinions of his boat, to me it is simply, different. Would it be my choice in design? Probably not. Would I say no to a sail? Hell no! (Google it)
Probably one of the most well known secrets to the island is its world famous Sunset Beach, what most people call the airplane beach, check out some shots how close it is.
We had the privilege of a day trip to St Barth’s. A day is sufficient if your on a budget as it gets pricey very quickly, especially for Canadians paying EURO’s, converting to US and then back CAD.
The island is super cool and I hear the beaches are just as beautiful as St Martin if not better. We went for the food and the shopping. (We wandered IN and OUT of Louis Vuitton this time.)
Coincidentally we both bought flip flops. Some great shops with locally made stuff, although most places do.
We went to the same place for breakfast and lunch as it was right in the marina overlooking the luxurious island and boats. The food was Absolutely INCREDIBLE! The drinks were too though one would think a drink is a drink.
It’s called “le Carré.” For lunch appy we had sea scallop carpaccio!
Shaved scallops done with olive oil, lemon and parmesan…..fresh, raw, cold….amazing! I’m a gin fan, so I had a cucumber collins and a G’Vine gin & tonic. G’vine gin is a French wine gin so it’s a little sweeter than your typical gin, awesome in a gin and tonic, though maybe too sweet for a martini.
I would definitely go to the island just for lunch if I could go with someone who’s never been there.
There is so much more to write about and tell you about, but some people find this boring.
Lisa will tell you more about the trip and our villa, along with many of our mishaps….until then, toodle-loo.
