February Birthstone – Amethyst
So February is my birth month, which makes it of course the most lovely gem of all, right? 😉
I have always loved the amethyst, whether its because I knew it was my birthstone or not, I am not sure… It was also my grandma’s favorite stone, and her favorite color of all colors in anything.
In looking into the origins and folklore associated with Amethyst, the legend of its origin is intensely interesting. The story goes like this… the Greek God of Wine, Dionysus, was insulted one day by a mortal. Enraged, he called forth vicious tigers to exact revenge on the next mortal who would cross his path. The maiden, Amethyst, was the unlucky traveler, on her way to pay tribute to the Goddess Diana. The innocent maiden found herself face to face with the tiger companions of the vengeful god. To save her from the beasts, Diana turned Amethyst into a statue of pure crystalline quartz. Amethyst was so beautiful that Dionysus, now in sorrow and remorse, wept tears of rich wine over the statue, staining the quartz purple. So while the story is sadly beautiful, the Amethyst has happier connotations in today’s modern society.
With a hardness of 7 it’s a good stone for everyday wear, though care needs to be taken with direct sunlight and exposure to heat, as it may cause the color to fade. The color ranges from light purple, lilac if you will, to a dark purple.
For the girl or woman born in the month of February, this is the stone you can’t go wrong with, and for anyone seeking the feminine touch and poetic origin, this is the perfect stone for you!
